Buyer beware.

from pps123.vodpod.com posted with vodpod

This funny Jim Carrey clip carries a very serious message…..beware the charlatan posing in a martial arts uniform.  Unfortunately self defense and martial arts are sometimes not the same. Effective self defense instruction is more to do with the teacher than the system. Those who are proficient in teaching self defense have spent a considerable time understanding the realities of violenceand as such may have modified their system or style to these realities. Many techniques within martial arts are applicable, when updated or modified, to deal with street violence but many more are not…..anyone who tries to sell you on their system but has not spent time understanding violence as it pertains to our modern world is not attuned to the realities of conflict.

If he teaches you techniques that do not appear realistic to you simply do not go back. To learn something unrealistic is worse than learning nothing as it may give you a false sense of  security which, when tested in a conflict, will fail you and may get you even more hurt.

All self defense systems should include elements of pre conflict, modified, gross motor based conflict, and post conflict. If they do not then buyers beware………

Stay Safe. Stay Alert.

A thug follows a young woman and grabs her from behind while she was walking through a dimly lit parking lot, smoking a cigarette and talking on her cell phone late at night…..Beggar’s belief doesn’t it? How many of you out there are shaking your heads while tsk, tsking at the foolishness of this young woman asking yourselves “what was she thinking?” Now the purpose of this article in not to judge or criticize as we do not know they particulars of why she was where she was but rather to use it to learn from.  There are lessons here for all of us. I am sure we have all found ourselves walking down a darkened area, even if it’s in our own neighborhood, when we felt that sense of dread that caused us to catch our breath and pick up our pace……………………

There are a multitude of lessons to be learned from this story but we will focus on the few that are most relevant and easiest to implement to ensure this never happens to you.

Rage is a powerful emotion and one that you should look to use should you find yourself in a violent situation.  When in a rage state you feel no pain, you are faster, stronger and engaged in action. You will literally tear through a wall with superhuman effort.

Unfortunately, the truth is that most who find themselves in a situation where someone is intent in hurting, raping or killing them is to assume a passive attitude brought on by the emotion of fear and exacerbated by a “mental freeze”, a condition where the mind is overwhelmed by the situation facing it. The passive attitude is adopted in the hope that the individual facing you might, somehow, leave you alone. The reality is that unless you change your emotional makeup from one of fear to one of rage he is free to do to you what he wants. So how do you engage this powerful emotion? The why of this blog

February 23, 2008

Protect

Tagging this a self defense blog may, in hindsight, be a bit of a misnomer. It may have been more accurate to call it an “awareness” blog as it is predominantly focused on what happens before a violent attack takes place. Looking at the lead up to a violent attack enables you to avoid a potentially violent encounter thereby negating the need to have extensive training in physical combat, an activity that most are not inclined to participate in for numerous reasons.

Apples

February 22, 2008

I stand in the produce section and hold two apples in my hands. The one on the left has a bruise; a small dent from the wire basket I took it from, it’s lost its luster and is a dull green. The apple in my right is green, fresh from the produce isle, with the stem still attached and a sheen of dew on it that catches the light just so. Which apple is better? Which apple would you rather eat? I purchase both apples and bring them home. I place them on the countertop and reach for a sharp knife, cutting both in half. The apple on the left has a good core, has retained texture and the faults seem to be only skin deep. The apple on the right is rotten in the core due to a weevil, to the point that the rot has extended well into the apple itself. The apple on the left was the better choice. Not fair, I hear you complain? No, probably not and I admit that. In most cases, choosing the apple on the right will be the correct choice as cutting an apple to look inside is not a pragmatic way of choosing our fruit, especially in the store. It does, however, prove that you cannot always judge the integrity of something based solely on the way it looks. Yet this is exactly what we do when we prejudge and label others, especially the “criminal”. Read the rest of this entry ?
