A thug follows a young woman and grabs her from behind while she was walking through a dimly lit parking lot, smoking a cigarette and talking on her cell phone late at night…..Beggar’s belief doesn’t it? How many of you out there are shaking your heads while tsk, tsking at the foolishness of this young woman asking yourselves “what was she thinking?” Now the purpose of this article in not to judge or criticize as we do not know they particulars of why she was where she was but rather to use it to learn from. There are lessons here for all of us. I am sure we have all found ourselves walking down a darkened area, even if it’s in our own neighborhood, when we felt that sense of dread that caused us to catch our breath and pick up our pace……………………
There are a multitude of lessons to be learned from this story but we will focus on the few that are most relevant and easiest to implement to ensure this never happens to you.
I am going to start with the obvious even though I am sure it is patently obvious to most of you. Never, ever walk down a dark area. If you need to get somewhere on foot do so by going by a route that is well lit and populated. If there is no such route get a cab or simply do not go and, if the purpose of the trip is to meet someone, arrange to meet at another location. If the destination is your work location then I recommend you get new job!But here is the most important lesson from this story. This young woman was not only totally oblivious to her surroundings she actually made it worse by distracting herself talking on her cell phone. Now I know that in some rare cases you may find yourself walking in a darkened area, (perhaps even in your own neighborhood) when you may suddenly feel a sense of trepidation and I know that, for some people, talking on their cell to a someone while they walk makes them feel safe. This is a false sense of security as it reduces your ability to concentrate on your surroundings. If cannot safely back track to where you came from so as to find an alternate way to your destination and you want to let someone know where you are then stop, do a 360 degree reconnaissance of your surroundings. If it is safe then call them and briefly tell them where you are and where you are going. Give them an estimated time of when they should hear from you again once you areat your destination, all the while scanning your surroundings. Then hang up and get moving. Walk with purpose, with your head held high. Continue to scan your surroundings by eye movement only. Listen carefully for any sounds that stand out (e.g. running footfalls, etc). If you think someone is following you then cross the street. If they also cross the street then you must cross the street again. If they follow suit then stop, turn and ask them in a load voice “are you following me?” If they are not they will probably stop, be embarrassed at having frightened you, will murmur no and make gestures that show they are clearly not following you. For example they may cross the street, slowing their pace or turn and walk in another direction. Should they try to start up a conversation or get closer ask them to stop. If they do not then at least you know that you are in a dangerous situation and with enough distance between the two of you can make a run for it so as to escape. If you are female and are wearing heels, remove them, drop anything in your arms such as purses, bags, shopping, etc, anything that might slow you down or restrict your movement. Then start running for your life. You may think that this is the wrong approach; you may think it is better to pick up the pace and hope that he is just out for his nightly walk; you hope that he is just a nice guy who means you no harm. Hope is not a good strategy in this situation, hope has no place here. Knowledge through awareness is king in this domain. By knowing what is going on you can at act and escape. With hope, like the young woman in this clip, you can only react and by then it may be too late.Stay safe. Be alert.P
Hello,
You make good points about awareness. While there is not panacea, being aware of one’s surroundings would allow a woman a head start to get away is the situation merited. I also think some self-defense training, legal weapons and avoidance of bad or dimly lit areas would also help.
You might be interested in my post entitled, “Teenaged girl of 15 – escapes rapist” I posted today as it deals with a girl that was grabbed and dragged down an embankment and escaped.
I think you commentary is right on.
